Every August the 14th Sassari celebrates the "Festha Manna" , an event which makes citizens come together, united, for the stunning downhill of Candelieri, down to the city center alleys until the Santa Maria di Betlem church.
It's not just about the show, it's about faith. The hard effort of carrying the eleven wooden candles along the route represent the will to honour Virgin Mary. The vote celebration started more than 500 years ago , when according ti tradition, Virgin Mary freed the city from the pestilence. But the real protagonists of Festha Manna ("big feast" in Sassari's dialect) and real symbols of the city, are the "gremi", with their old-fashioned clothes, and the crowd that cheers and claps the carriers and their amazing dance.
